Numerous studies convincingly prove that bone mass is the main determinant of mechanical properties of bone tissue and 75-80% determines its strength. The density of bone tissue varies with age and depends on many internal and external factors. The lumbar and thoracic spine is the most vulnerable to osteoporosis, as these areas are the ones that bear stress the most. There are various methods for determining the density of bone tissue. The introduction of computed tomography (CT) into the clinical practice has opened new opportunities for a separate determination of the density of compact and cancellous bone tissue. CT machines are more informative, especially in the study of different parts of the spine. The literature does not contain data on the dynamic age-related changes in bone density of vertebrae in persons of Carpathian region determined by computed tomography. Therefore, the purpose of the work was to study the parameters of the density of cancellous and compact bone tissue of Th12 and L1 vertebral bodies depending on age and gender. Using computed tomography the density of the cancellous and compact bone of the Th12 and L1 vertebrae of 150 people from Carpathian region (72 males and 78 females) of different age groups was determined. The analysis of parameters of the cancellous bone density shows that regardless of gender, the increase of these parameters is observed in both vertebrae, starting from puberty to youth. In males, the maximum increase in the density of cancellous tissue is observed in the period from adolescence to youth and it is 15.83% for Th12 and 15.81% – for L1. In females, the corresponding parameter attains a maximum from puberty to adolescence, and it is 22.34% for Th12 and 13.68% – for L1. Starting from the first mature age, the density of cancellous tissue begins to decrease slightly and becomes minimal in the senile age in both genders. In males of the second mature age, this parameter decreases by 11.56% for Th12 and by 15.34% for L1 compared to people in the first mature age. In the period from the second mature age to advanced age the density of Th12 cancellous bone reduced by 37.68% and L1 – by 38.7%. In males of senile age, the corresponding figures are lower by 29.85% (Th12) and 24.63% for L1 than those in the previous age group. In general, in males from the first mature age to senile age, the density of cancellous tissue decreases by 56.44% in Th12 and 56.85% in L1. The analysis of the density of the cancellous bone in the same vertebrae in females shows that there is no statistically significant difference between the obtained parameters for adolescent, young and first mature age. In the period from the first to the second mature age, the cancellous bone density of Th12 reduced by 10.62% and L1 – 12.37%. In females of the advanced age, this figure reduced by 27.03% for Th12 and by 31.93% for L1 compared with those of the second mature age. In the period from the advanced to senile age, the cancellous bone density of Th12 reduced by 34.07% and L1 – by 29.29%. In general, in females from the first mature age to senile age, the density of cancellous tissue reduced by 51.10% in Th12 and by 57.57% in L1 The analysis of the density of the compact bone tissue of Th12 and L1 vertebrae shows that this parameter attains its maximum in adolescence and is maintained at this level to 35 years in individuals of both genders. Subsequently, there is its gradual decrease. This figure reduced by 33.86% for Th12 and by 35.735% for L1 in males from adolescent to senile age, the mass loss in the compact bone is 31.06% for Th12 and 33.15% for L1 in females for the corresponding period. Thus, the loss of cancellous bone occurs quite rapidly and is more than 50% of the maximum value. The density of compact tissue decreases more smoothly and its loss ranges from 31 to 36% depending on gender.
