Dental prostheses are considered as a device with therapeutic, rehabilitation and prophylactic functions, which improves the quality of life of a dental patient. Adaptation to a prosthesis is a multifaceted process. From these positions, the habituation to prostheses is explained by the development of cortical inhibition, which leads to the disappearance of the sensation of a foreign object in the mouth. These changes occur on the basis of the general law, according to which a repeated repetitive stimulus becomes a inhibitory agent. On the basis of masticography it is established that habituation to prostheses is connected with emergence of perfection and fixing of new conditioned reflexes. The combination of these views is to clarify the role of both conditioned and unconditioned reflexes in the processes of adaptation to dentures. These studies have shown that in response to the repeated irritating effect of the prosthesis, unconditional protective inhibition develops, and the restoration of masticatory function is due to the formation of a new dynamic stereotype of the act of eating. An important component of adaptation processes in patients is psychological adaptation. It is believed that it is the sum of complex conditioned reflex reactions of the patient, which belong to the sphere of human emotions and determine the degree of satisfaction with prostheses. The importance of psychological factors in the development of adaptation to prostheses stimulates the creation of new and improvement of existing methods for assessing the psycho-emotional state of orthopedic dental patients. According to the results of these methods, high personal anxiety is the main factor that causes the development of psycho-emotional stress in orthopedic treatment. The review article analyzes the mechanisms of adaptation to dentures. The problem of in-depth understanding of the phonetic aspects of rehabilitation mechanisms at the stages of prosthesis use is covered.
