In this paper using classical histological methods and developed by us morphometric technique were studied metric parameters of the human dorsal root ganglion neurons (L2-L4), in 20-23 weeks of prenatal period of development. It is clear from research that during the studying period of fetal development, the general plan of the internal structure of the dorsal root ganglion neurons is not fundamentally different from that of the sensory ganglions of the head, at an appropriate stage fetogenesis and, in general, resembles the structure of the dorsal root ganglion neurons in adults. Bundles of nerve fibers and layers of connective tissue, are divide nerve cells into separate groups. Each group has from 2-3 to several tens of neurons. Here, the main interior space of the dorsal root ganglion is occupied by bundles of nerve fibers and connective tissue layers with blood vessels – 75,2 ± 2,5%. On neurons accounted for only 24,8 ± 1,6% cross-sectional area of the dorsal root ganglion. This circumstance is connected, apparently, with the increasing priority at this stage fetogenesis of the processes of nerve cells, providing peripheral innervation of the extensively growing trunk and lower extremities. The average density of neurons in our observations was 570 ± 46 cells per 1 mm2 square unit section. The most numerous groups of neurons, numbering up to several tens of the cellular elements in each, concentrated in the subcapsular parts of the ganglion. In the central part of the ganglion is determined relatively a small number of neurocytes, which are located in the form of chains, one-two rows, occasionally found single neurons. Nerve cells have a round, oval, rarely polygonal shape and one nucleus containing 1-2 nucleolus. This stage of fetal development dorsal root ganglion neurons are the quite heterogeneous population. Among the latter are found small neurons, whose diameter was in the range 8.5-10 microns, and the volume was, on average, 1258 ± 135 μm³. This type of neurons is characterized by relatively large nucleus to the cytoplasm and relatively homogeneous tinctorial properties of the cytoplasm. Also in the sensory ganglions occur neurons the average diameter of 60-73 microns, volume – 31300 ± 450 μm³, but the number of the latter is extremely small. In general, the average diameter of the spinal neurocytes nodes at this stage of fetal development was 25.4 ± 3,3 microns, respectively, their volume was 8732 ± 340 μm³. Among the entire set of the nerve cells of the dorsal root ganglion dominated neurons the average diameter of which is within 16,5-31 microns and an average volume of which was within the 1140-10480 μm³, there were 75% of the total amount of cells. Among the nerve cells of medium and large sizes it is possible to distinguish neurons with intensely stained cytoplasm and neurons, which stained the cytoplasm rather pale. Nerve cells with intensely stained cytoplasm are found much more frequently. It should also be noted absence of all types of the lipofuscin pigment granules in the cytoplasm of neurons when the presence of it in varying amounts is quite common for neurons in postnatal development.
