Different patients experience pain caused by the same injuries in different ways. These differences are partly the result of genetic differences between people, but can also be explained by psychophysiological modulating factors.Швидкість розвитку і специфічність клінічної картини болю визначаються тривалістю впливу травмуючого агента, рівнем та обсягом залучення в процеси передачі болю різних соматичних (або/ і вісцеральних) структур, конституціональних особливостях, відмінностях у відповідній руховій поведінці (стилях купування емоціогенного і фізіологічного стресу).Різні пацієнти по-різному відчувають біль, викликаний одними і тими самими ушкодженнями.
