The aim was to analyze the morphological, structural and lexico-semantic presentation of the Latin terms denoting the infectious and parasitic diseases, part of which is a zoonymic component. Materials and methods: The presentation sample was made by the method of continuous sampling based on textbooks, manuals, including the three-volume edition “Infectious and parasitic diseases”, and a number of modern dictionaries. Structural, semantic and descriptive methods were used to address the aim of the research. Results: Monolexemic composites with a zoomorphic component are formed in a suffixal way. In multi-word phrases, syntactic constructions of mixed type, are usually used and they are characterized by the combination of words of Greek and Latin origin, but these formations are few. The eponymous and toponymic formations to denote specific nosological forms in helminthology are not typical. The data on the first contribution of a researcher to the description of the disease in the name of the term is not displayed, preference is still given to the name of the pathogen, rather than the name of the researcher. The prefix-suffix-based method of formation of terms denoting infectious and parasitic diseases with a zoonymic component is observed sporadically. Conclusions: The comparison of the above-analyzed terms with the corresponding terminological units of the English medical terminology indicates the predominant use of Latin terminological units. In contrast to many clinical terms with a zoomorphic component, where certain associative moments are taken into account.

Effective communication in English is crucial for medical students, as much of medical literature and international collaboration occurs in English. However, Ukrainian medical students frequently struggle with constructing grammatically correct sentences due to significant differences between Ukrainian and English syntax. This paper examines the most prevalent sentence structure errors among Ukrainian medical students, including word order confusion, misuse of articles, overuse of passive voice, incorrect relative clause formation, and subject-verb agreement issues. The analysis, based on formative and summative assessments, identifies recurring linguistic challenges and categorizes errors to better understand their causes. Key difficulties arise from the flexibility of Ukrainian word order, the absence of articles in the Ukrainian language, and differences in passive construction and verb agreement. To address these challenges, the paper explores effective teaching strategies, such as contrastive analysis, error analysis, targeted grammar exercises, and extensive exposure to medical texts. Regular speaking and writing practice, peer feedback, and interactive learning methods are also highlighted as essential for improving syntactic accuracy. By implementing these strategies, educators can enhance students’ proficiency in English, equipping them with the necessary skills for academic success and professional communication in the medical field. Ефективне спілкування англійською мовою є вирішальним для майбутніх фахівців у галузі медицини у кон тексті вибудовування успішної кар’єри та міжнародної співпраці. Українські здобувачі освіти часто зіштов хуються з труднощами у побудові граматично правильних речень через значні відмінності між українським та англійським синтаксисом. У цій статті розглянуті найпоширеніші помилки в побудові речень, яких при пускаються студенти-медики, зокрема плутанина в порядку слів, неправильне вживання артиклів, надмірне використання пасивного стану, помилки в утворенні відносних речень та проблеми узгодження підмета з дієсловом. Аналіз, що ґрунтується на результатах формувального та підсумкового оцінювання, дозволив визначити та класифікувати часто повторювані мовні помилки для кращого розуміння причин їхнього виникнення та визначення підходів для їх усунення. Основні труднощі виникають інтерференцію рідно мови, а саме через гнучкість українського порядку слів, зумовлену, передусім, наявністю відмінків, відсутність артиклів у рідній мові та відмінності в пасивних конструкціях і узгодженні дієслів. Для подолан ня цих проблем у статті запропоновано ефективні стратегії навчання, такі як контрастивний аналіз, аналіз помилок, граматичні вправи, спрямовані на закріплення вживання певних структур, та аналіз автентичних текстів. Регулярна практика усного та письмового мовлення, своєчасних зворотній зв’язок та інтерактивні методи навчання також є важливими кроками щодо удосконалення синтаксичної точності.

Effective communication is indispensable in the field of dentistry, not only within the academic realm but also in the international relationships between dental professionals and their patients. Academic communication hones skills required for research sharing, overseas internships, exchange programs, and international conferences. Patient-dentist communication, a critical aspect in clinical practice, encompasses both verbal and non-verbal techniques. This article examines current approaches and nuances in developing speaking skills among dental students. Teaching monologic and dialogic speaking in English necessitates adherence to principles of accessibility, systematicity, and interdisciplinary connections. Various methods, such as role-playing, brainstorming, and situational modelling, are employed, fostering practical experiences and active engagement. Instructors play a pivotal role, emphasizing ethical communication and providing guidance. The balance between fluency and accuracy is critical. Teaching dental terminology simplifies technical vocabulary for patient understanding, trust-building, and effective healthcare interactions. Thus, developing speaking skills equips dental students for professional interactions, research sharing, and collaboration in a diverse healthcare landscape.

Grammar elements of narrative discourse in dentistry case reports

Narrative elements play an important role in professional discourse, yet the narrative strategies within dentistry case reports have received limited attention. This study analyses the narrative grammar markers in 40 clinical case reports from prominent dentistry journals to shed light on their pragmatic functions. Dentistry case reports employ verbs and verbal forms over noun phrases, facilitating a dynamic and engaging narrative style. The prevalent use of the past tense creates a chronological account of patient history and treatment progression, enhancing readability. Active voice, occasionally with first-person plural subjects, infuses a personal dimension into the narrative, further engaging readers. Additionally, the inclusion of direct and reported speech from patients bolsters credibility and evidentiality. Understanding these narrative grammar markers enriches the discourse of dental professionals, making their case reports more accessible and persuasive. This study unravels the distinctive narrative style of dentistry case reports, contributing to the efficacy of knowledge dissemination within the dental community.

Цель исследования. В статье подведены итоги деятельности кафедры иностранных языков с латинским языком и медицинской терминологией за 90 лет своего существования. Авторы рассматривают ключевые этапы функционирования этого структурного подразделения на разных исторических этапах. Методы исследования: хронологический, исторический и метод системного анализа. Научная новизна. Впервые комплексно отражена деятельность кафедры иностранных языков с латинским языком и медицинской терминологией. Представлены научные, методические, учебные достижения на протяжении 1931‒2020 гг. Выводы. Показано, что одним из приоритетных направлений деятельности кафедры на современном этапе является формирование коммуникативной компетенции студентов-медиков, обеспечивающей их успешную квази-профессиональную и профессиональную деятельность. Differentia specifica исследуемого периода ‒ обеспечение учебного процесса качественной учебной, справочной литературой с акцентом на реализацию междисциплинарных связей в процессе преподавания латинского языка, медицинской терминологии и английского языка для специальных целей. Подтверждением этого тезиса является количество победителей всеукраинских и международных олимпиад, подготовленных на кафедре в течение последних 15 лет.
How to incorporate academic writing pedagogy in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education

Introduction: Medical researchers, who are non-native English speakers, are facing now the growing need to publish their research results in international journals switching to an English-only policy, to apply for grants and scholarship, but at the same time this puts many authors whose native language is not English at a disadvantage compared to their English-speaking counterparts. Objectives: This paper aims at analysing the existing parameters of academic writing proficiency of medical undergraduate and postgraduate students; elucidating current approaches to develop academic writing competency and to promote academic multi-literacy of junior researchers, and outlining the general recommendations to improve the quality and sophistication of their writing by incorporating the principles and achievements of academic writing pedagogy into the system of medical training. Material and Methods: This study is an empirical applied research of a qualitative type mainly based on data elicited from informants (n=120) of the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy aged from 20 – 35. Results and Discussion: All participants were able to identify personal problem areas, and virtually all they note dissatisfaction with the use of English in their scholarly writing. They stated the obvious difficulties in sentence patterns and keeping tone of scientific narrative format. Writing in genres other than original research articles seems to be quite demanding and is often associated with the lack of self-confidence and language anxiety. Attention to developing academic writing skills should focus on the basic elements of academic writing, characteristics of written genres across the disciplines, providing a framework in which expert and practical knowledge is internally organized.
Identifying key areas in teaching English grammar for academic writing

Cучасному академічному письму притаманні характерні граматичні структури та моделі слововживання, які застосовуються для вираження певних комунікативних функцій. Доведено, що лексикограматичний підхід, який передбачає опанування поширених граматичних моделей у поєднанні з відповідними лексичними одиницями, виявився надзвичайно ефективним у навчанні академічному письму. Різні жанри академічної прози навіть у межах певної галузі знання вимагають різних лінгвістичних засобів. Тому вибір найпоширеніших структур, текстів різних жанрів та відповідного рівня складності, їх опрацювання при розробці навчальних завдань, які передбачають гнучке осмислене використання мовних засобів, у значній мірі сприяє формуванню іншомовних та професійних компетенцій у здобувачів вищої медичної освіти.

The patient’s voluntary informed consent for medical intervention has been known as an integral part of the modern system of moral, ethical and legal regulation of healthcare provision. Grammar complexity of formal language and terminology differences between healthcare providers and patients may cause communication problems and adversely affect patient access to health information, leading to poor satisfaction for both parties. There have been few reports clarifying the selection of the language means in order to facilitate patients’ complete and unhindered understanding of the information in informed consent template for dental treatment and to influence them in making the right decision. The aim of the study is to investigate grammar characteristics (sentence structure, voice, the tense and aspect of finite verb phrases) and to analyze the findings from functional perspective and communicative purposes. This empirical research of qualitative descriptive type was based on the corpus of 50 informed consent templates for dental treatment used by the USA healthcare settings authorized to provide oral and dental services Critical discourse analysis is a main analytic technique employed in the study. The main idea behind the informed consent is that individuals having obtained a sufficient amount of special information and clearly understood it should be able to make their own knowledgeable and voluntary decisions concerning the exposure to potentially dangerous dental procedures. Text structuring, headings, metatextual devices in the templates demonstrate doctor’s responsibility for understanding text by the patients, i.e. the respectful and careful attitude to the clients. The average length of the texts and the average length of the sentences are also taken into account, whereas the documents are designed within the patient-centred approach and in patient-friendly manner. Though the texts of informed consent templates are relatively short, they abound in composite sentences: the complex sentences make up 69.3 %, the complex-compound sentences make up to 7.14%. Simple sentences, 21.5%, rank the second position. Composite sentences as well as numerous simple sentences with extended homogenous parts are exploited in the informed consent templates in order to minimize misunderstanding in the interpretation medical information, but, on the other hand, they can to interfere with quick and complete comprehension of the dependency relations among the ideas expressed in the sentences. Sentences in the active voice exceed those in passive voice that makes the text more readable and understandable.

The presentation of information in dental advertisements significantly influences engagement and drives sales of dental materials, tools, equipment, software, and other products. Rational persuasion in contemporary commercial print advertisements involves the use of logical arguments, factual evidence, and clear information to convince potential customers to buy a product or service, appealing to the reader’s intellect and reason rather than emotions. The objective of this study is to elucidate the linguistic tools employed for rational persuasion in the body copy of contemporary commercial print advertisements targeting dental professionals. A corpus of 250 printed advertisements showcasing innovative dental products was compiled from three leading dental journals published between 2021 and 2024. Our analysis revealed a strategic use of various linguistic tools to craft compelling and persuasive messages. Effective advertisements involve a sophisticated selection of lexis. The use of industry specific vocabulary builds credibility and establishes trust with dentists who appreciate targeted language. Action verbs and dynamic language emphasize product effectiveness and resonate with dentists focused on results. Quantitative and precise language, including numerical data, measurements, and time expressions, ensures clear communication of key details crucial for informed evaluation. While dental advertisements employ common commercial advertising syntax pat terns, they also exhibit particular linguistic features. Prevalent clipped sentences mirror the communication style within the dental community, enhancing message effectiveness. Parallelism is prominently used to highlight product characteristics, improving memorability and message processing. The strategic use of vocabulary and syntax plays a crucial role in creating a rational and persuasive message for dental professionals by focusing on clear communication, technical accuracy, and addressing their specific needs. Представлення професійно важливої інформації в стоматологічній рекламі суттєво впливає на просування та обсяг продажів матеріалів, інструментів, обладнання, програмного забезпечення та інших товарів. Раціональне переконання, органічно вплетене в сучасну комерційну рекламу, орієнтовану на фахівців як цільову аудиторію, ґрунтується на логічних аргументах, чітких фактах та вичерпній інформації, щоби спонукати потенційних клієнтів до придбання товару чи послуги, апелюючи до їхнього інтелекту. Мета запропонованого дослідження – визначити лінгвістичні засоби раціонального переконання в текстах інформаційних блоків сучасної комерційної друкованої реклами, орієнтованої на фахівців зі стоматології. Матеріалом дослідження слугували 250 друкованих рекламних оголошень, які просували інноваційні стоматологічні продукти (інструменти, обладнання, матеріали, програмне забезпечення тощо), вибрані з трьох провідних стоматологічних журналів за 2021–2024 роки. Отримані дані продемонстрували стратегічне використання різних лінгвістичних інструментів для створення привабливих і переконливих повідомлень. Одним із ключових елементів раціонального переконання є ретельний підбір лексики. Застосування специфічної галузевої термінології, фахової лексики чи, подекуди, професійного жаргону, сприяє формуванню довіри стоматологів до виробників продукції, оскільки свідчить про глибоке розуміння виробниками професійної мови та, відповідно, потреб і цінностей своїх клієнтів. Активне використання дієслів дії створює динамічний стиль мовлення, який резонує з професіоналами, орієнтованими на результат. Лексичні засоби, що позначають різні аспекти об’єктивної дійсності, такі як одиниці позначення часу, швидкості, маси тощо, сприяють точному опису ключових деталей, характеристик, які є критичними для обґрунтованого ухвалення рішення. Хоча стоматологічна реклама використовує загальні синтаксичні моделі, характерні для комерційної реклами в цілому, вона також має певні особливості, що відрізняють її від інших видів реклами. Це, зокрема, чергування простих коротких речень, які відображають стиль спілкування у конкретному професійному середовищі, зі складними чи ускладненими, які властиві науковому стилю. Паралелізм широко застосовують для підкреслення характеристик продукту, що сприяє їх кращому сприйняттю та запам’ятовуванню. Стратегічне використання лексики та синтаксису відіграє вирішальну роль у створенні точних переконливих повідомлень, адаптованих до потреб фахівців у галузі стоматології.
Role of technical presentations in facilitating the acquisition of medical terminology and development of professional medical skills for medical students learning English as a foreign language
