Документ A stylistic analysis of medical article titles focused on the war in Ukraine. The aim of the study is to analyse the stylistic means in article titles, through which the scientists aspire to convey their message to the audience, attract the readers’ attention, persuade and stimulate them to take specific actions. We selected 697 research papers from the PubMed database, published since 24 February 2022, using relevant search terms (“Ukraine”, “war”, “impacts”, and “health”), and examined them by applying the methods of stylistic, structural, and contextual analysis. The study detected 17 stylistic techniques (alliteration and assonance, allusion, anaphora, antithesis, ellipsis, idiom, metaphor, oxymoron, parallelism, paronomasia, periphrasis, personification, repetition, rhetorical questions, ecphonesis, and rhyming titles) that are used to highlight the numerous detrimental impacts of the war. The authors emphasize that analysing the stylistic features of contemporary publications is essential for the advanced study of a foreign language, in particular, for identifying and comprehending the implicit meanings of texts, as well as applying relevant rhetorical devices in professional writing appropriately in order to achieve pragmatic communication goals. Розроблено методичні рекомендації щодо мінімізації й уникнення помилок у писемному мовленні українських науковців при роботі з жанром “medical case report” англомовного медичного дискурсу;The present paper focuses on potential grammar and lexical challenges which Ukrainian scientists may face when writing medical case reports (MCRs) in English. MCRs as a genre of medical discourse has its own unique features, traditional lexical structures and grammar rules, which must be taken into account. The main differences in the scientific style of the Ukrainian and English languages have been outlined. The ways to minimize and avoid errors in the written speech of medical professionals have been suggested. The authors emphasize the necessity to pay special attention to stylistic features of MCRs when developing academic ESP syllabi at medical universities. The study of potential difficulties, which Ukrainian medical professionals may encounter in the process of writing English MCRs, is important for developing relevant guidelines to eliminate possible mistakes and avoid misunderstanding in medical communication. The authors assert that presenting the research results without consideration of academiс norms, grammar and lexical features of the English language can lead to mistakes and misunderstanding, and result in a written work of poor quality. It is crucial for medical professionals to be aware of peculiarities of academic writing in English in order to be understood and acknowledged in the modern English-speaking world. The analysis of potential challenges in writing MCRs in English as a means of international scientific communication is an important element for integration of Ukrainian researchers into the world community. The authors present their experience of undertaking a three-month online course “Constructive Classroom Conversations: Mastering Language for College and Career Readiness,” hosted by Stanford University, and discuss the benefits of applying this tool at universities. The study describes the basic mechanisms of the Conversation Analysis Tool aimed at developing specific communication skills in students of English for Speakers of Other Languages. The central research question is whether this method is as feasible for teaching literature as it is for language classrooms. The authors demonstrate their takeaways from applying this technique in teaching world literature, namely, analyzing literary dialogues in different classroom activities. The research findings indicate that the Conversation Analysis Tool is an efficient method for the formative assessment of senior students in the world literature classroom. This technique helps students reveal the pragmatic features of fiction dialogues, the writer’s narrative intentions, and the reader’s expected reception. The suggested method also demonstrates students’ progress in the studied topics and identifies possible gaps in mastering the educational content. The significance of the study extends beyond the specified context, as the search for novel instruction techniques targeted at improving communication skills in the 21st-century globalized world is relevant for any educational sphere. Методи дослідження: наратологічний, теорія рецептивної естетики, феміністична літературна критика. Об'єкт дослідження - трагедія Евріпіда "Медея" як один i3 найяскравіших здобутків давньогрецької драматургії, що складає базис практично всіх сучасних літератур світу і концептуальне підґрунтя гендерного дискурсу, який нe втрачає своєї актуальності й нині. Наукова новизна. У статті уточнено художні інтенції автора і роль читацької рецепції в конструюванні образу жінки, традиційного для давньогрецького суспільства, а також доповнено попередні студії зарубіжних дослідників стосовно наративної деконструкції гендерних стереотилів на прикладі сюжетної лінії Медеї. Висновки. Гендерний світогляд автора виявляє тенденцію до руйнування усталених канонів щодо традиційного місця жінки в суспільстві. У ході дослідження виявлено, що B трагедії Евріпіда простежується сміливий зсув гендерних ролей і відмова від традиційного статусу жінки з суспільстві за рахунок прогресивного характеру головної героїні, яка постає втіленням незламної волі та здатна протистояти усталеним уявленням. Показано, що переслідуючи власні амбіції, Медея повністю ігнорує багато клішованих жіночих характеристик. This paper aims to explore the significance of essay writing skills in medical education, and to examine how these contribute to the development of well-rounded and competent professionals in healthcare and environmental studies. The study delineates the major benefits of developing essay writing skills and identifies the key writing competencies that may be beneficial for various activities in healthcare and ecology. Finally, we explore diverse essay types, foregrounding 10 major subtypes, relevant to the professional areas under consideration. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the pivotal writing competencies that can enhance various aspects of healthcare and ecology. On a practical level, our study provides valuable insights for educators and institutions aiming to tailor writing curricula to the specific needs and challenges faced by healthcare professionals and ecologists. The paper provides guidelines for universities on the integration of essay writing skills into curricula, including the cultivation of critical thinking and analytical abilities, enhancement of communication and research skills, promotion of collaborative and interdisciplinary work, and integration of reflective practice. У статті обґрунтовано доцільність розвитку навичок написання академічного есе в медико-екологічній освіті. Авторами виокремлено ключові навички, удосконаленню яких варто приділяти особливу увагу під час англомовної підготовки здобувачів освіти. Наголошено, що опанування навичок написання академічного есе сприяє розвитку критичного мислення, рефлексивно-аналітичних здібностей, комунікативних і дослідницьких умінь, глибшому розумінню міждисциплінарних зв’язків та інтеграції здобутих знань, забезпечує чітке формулювання оригінальних ідей, усебічний аналіз складних питань у галузях охорони здоров’я та екології, а відтак – обґрунтоване прийняття рішень у майбутній професійній діяльності. Findings reveal semantic groups and etymological origins, distinguishing terms derived from classical languages, English, and hybrid forms. The research highlights unique linguistic features within forensic medicine, emphasizing the need for further exploration and its implications for applied linguistics, ESP teaching, and research. Specifically, it suggests tailored teaching materials and approaches, integrating etymological and semantic analysis to enhance learners' comprehension and communication in the forensic medicine domain, ultimately preparing them for professional practice. У статті досліджено особливості термінотворення в галузі судової медицини. Проаналізовано 80 найуживаніших термінів у сфері судової медицини, запропоновано класифікації лексичних одиниць за структурними й етимологічними ознаками. Наголошено на необхідності подальшого дослідження лексико-семантичних й етимологічних особливостей термінотворення в галузі судової медицини, що відображають культурно-історичний контекст і сприяють розширенню нашого розуміння цієї субмови. The authors compare the features of academic essays in English and German by highlighting differences in terms of sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar, and register. Studying the characteristic traits of academic essays in multiple languages, as exemplified by English and German, helps to improve students’ writing skills. This will lead to enhanced cognitive and creative abilities, increase students’ ability to communicate with a wider audience, and will ultimately ensure competitive advantages in the job market. The relevance of the proposed study is due to the need to highlight the main advantages of lectures as direct communication between the lecturer and students (course participants), because in the COVID-19 pandemic, the society in general and academia in particular faced the problem of lack of live communication, which cannot be completely replaced even by latest information and communication technologies. The paper considers the advantages of the lecture as an "economical” and, provided the correct organization, an effective means of acquiring knowledge. Attention is paid to the personality of the lecturer. It is shown that the differentia specifica of a modern academic lecture is interactivity, which causes a change in the role of the lecturer from а simple translator of knowledge to а moderator, who should stimulate students' thinking, involve them in an active discussion of а particular issue or problem. В.; Лисанець, Юлія Валеріївна; Мороховець, Галина Юріївна; Гончарова, Євгенія Євгенівна; Мелащенко, Марина ПетрівнаThe article is interdisciplinary in nature and covers a wide range of issues in the history of medicine, morality and bioethics. Biographies of the Norwegian microbiologist G. Hansen and the German doctor, biologist, syphilologist A. Neisser are presented. The main attention is focused on the scientific achievements of these researchers in terms of infectious diseases and leprosy in particular. The authors focused not only on the significance of scientific discoveries, but also tried to show that any scientist, even an outstanding one, remains a person with his/her unique character, personal life and friendships, authority in the scientific community and mistakes, desire to gain fame and recognition. The main focus is on the scientific achievements of these researchers in the study of infectious diseases and leprosy in particular. The conflict over the priority for discovery of the leprosy pathogen has been highlighted. Attention is given to the conflict regarding the priority in discovery of the causative agent of leprosy. The authors compared the impact of the international scientific scandal on the priority for the discovery of Mycobacterium leprae, which involved virtually the entire scientific community of Europe at the time, on both scientists. It has been shown that most scientists unambiguously sided with G. Hansen, who was not only the author of the revolutionary hypothesis of the contagious and bacterial nature of leprosy at the time, but also the pioneer of the causative agent of this disease, as evidenced by the synonymous name Mycobacterium leprae – bacillus Hansen. Nevertheless, for a prominent scientist, the consequences of an unethical experiment on intentional additional infection of a patient became quite tragic, since he lost his license to practice medicine, and was put to a trial were his actions were found to be incompatible with the high-ranking status of a doctor, even though he was the unsalaried chief leprologist of Norway until his death. The biography of A. Neisser, who became the culprit of this high-profile scientific scandal, was simultaneously studied. It is shown that a series of A. Neisser’s experimental studies on another threatening disease – syphilis, by inoculation also led to a scandal, ironically, similar to that one around the name of Hansen. However, neither his reputation, nor his medical license, or his further scientific career suffered a significant impact, although it has become a precedent for obtaining informed consent from persons taking part in clinical trials. The findings revealed that, despite the desire to serve science and humanity, compliance with the rules of bioethics, as well as human morality, should remain an integral component in the work of any medical scientist. Статья имеет междисциплинарный характер и охватывает широкий круг вопросов истории медицины, морали и биоэтики. Представлены биографии норвежского врача микробиолога Г. Хансена и немецкого врача, биолога, сифилидолога А. Нейссера. Показано, что любой учёный, даже самый выдающийся, остается человеком с его уникальным характером, личной жизнью и дружескими связями, авторитетом в научном сообществе и фатальными ошибками, желанием достичь славы и признания. Основное внимание акцентировано на научных достижениях этих исследователей инфекционных болезней и лепры в частности. Описан конфликт, связанный с приоритетом открытия возбудителя лепры. Сравнено, какие последствия для Г. Хансена и А. Нейссера имел международный научный скандал относительно приоритета открытия Mycobacterium leprae, в который было вовлечено практически всё тогдашнее научное европейское сообщество. Показано, что большинство ученых однозначно встало на сторону Г. Хансена, который был не только автором революционной на то время гипотезы о контагиозно-бактериальной природе лепры, но и первооткрывателем возбудителя этой болезни, о чем свидетельствует синонимичное название Mycobacterium leprae – bacillus Hansen. Несмотря на это, для выдающегося ученого последствия неэтичного эксперимента с умышленным дополнительным инфицированием пациентки стали довольно трагическими, поскольку он потерял лицензию на медицинскую практику, пережил суд, по решению которого действия Г. Хансена были признаны несовместимыми с высоким званием врача, хотя он до конца жизни занимал должность внештатного главного лепролога Норвегии. Параллельно исследована биография А. Нейссера, который стал виновником этого громкого научного скандала. Показано, что серия экспериментальных исследований другой опасной болезни – сифилиса, – путем инокуляции, проведенных А. Нейссером, также привела к скандалу, который, по иронии судьбы, походил на тот, который в свое время разразился вокруг имени Г. Хансена. Впрочем, ни на репутацию, ни на медицинскую лицензию, ни на дальнейшую научную карьеру А. Нейссера этот досадный случай существенно не повлиял, хотя стал прецедентом для получения информированного согласия лиц, принимающих участие в клинических испытаниях. Серед них виділяють наступні: сумарну цитованість, загальну кількість посилань, індекс Хірша, імпакт-фактор, g-індекс, і-10-індекс. Метою статті є висвітлення прийомів роботи зі світовими науковометричними базами наукової літератури, пояснення сутності та алгоритмів розрахунку основних науковометричних показників. У процесі підготовки статті використано бібліосемантичний метод дослідження для аналізу наукової літератури. У статті висвітлено принципи роботи з міжнародними базами даних Scopus, Web of Science Google Scholar, бібліографічним менеджером Mendeley, системою ORCID, сутність науковометричних показників, що розраховуються даними ресурсами та сфери їх застосування. Проаналізовано позитивні сторони використання науковометричних показників для визначення впливовості конкретного автора чи установи, а також ряд суб’єктивних недоліків широкого їх впровадження у закладах вищої освіти. Сучасні інструменти роботи з науковою інформацією відіграють провідну роль у науково-дослідній діяльності вчених, закладів вищої освіти, наукових установ. Рівень якості публікацій визначається з допомогою низки науковометричних показників, що розраховуються авторитетними базами наукової літератури. Серед них визнаними є бази Scopus та Web of Science. h-індекси, розраховані на основі публікацій у цих базах, слугують якісними показниками оцінювання наукової діяльності. Scopus та Web of Science, крім власних вбудованих інструментів пошук у, візуалізації, аналізу та відслідковування даних, інтегровані з реєстрами вчених, бібліографічними менеджерами, плагінами, що дозволяють автоматизувати процеси створення цитат, списків літератури, підготовки публікацій за вимогами конкретного видання, роботи з повнотекстовими версіями статей у різних форматах ; В современной научной среде качество публикаций, публикационную активность ученого, учебного заведения или научного учреждения оценивают с помощью комплекса научнометрических показателей. Уровень качества публикаций определяется с помощью ряда научнометрических показателей, рассчитываемых авторитетными базами научной литературы. Среди них признанными являются базы Scopus и Web of Science. h-индексы, рассчитанные на основе публикаций в этих базах, служат качественными показателями оценки научной деятельности. There are the fol lowing parameters: total citations, total number of links, the Hirsch index, impact factor, g-index, and-10 index. The aim of the paper is to cover the methods of working with the world scientific and metric databases of literature, as well as to explain the essence and algorithms for calculating the major scientific and metric indicators. We used the bibliosemantic resea rch method in o rder to analyze the relevant scientific literature. The article describes the principles of mastering the tools of international databases Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Mendeley bibliographic manager, ORCID system. The paper focuse s on the essence of scientific and metric indicators, calculated by these resources, as well as their scope and possibilities. The authors analyze the positive aspects of using the scientific metrics to determine the influence of a particular author or ins titution, as well as a number of subjective disadvantages of their widespread adoption in higher edu cation. The modern tools for working with scientific information play a key role in the research activities of s cientists, instit u tions of higher education, research institutions. The quality of publications is determined by a number of scientific metrics, calc ulated by authoritative scientific literature databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science. The h - indices are calculated in terms of publications in th ese bases, and serve as qualitative indicators for scientific activity evaluation. The aim of the research is to provide a structural typology of “medicalized” lexical units in the modern British and American English, and to analyze the author’s pragmatic intentions and communicative strategies in each particular case. Materials and methods: The material of the research is the corpus of articles (2002-2017) from The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, Forbes and The New York Times. The “medicalized” lexical units were selected by automatic search and sampling, and considered by means of structural, narrative, contextual and component analysis methods. Review: It has been found that medicalization in the British and American mass media discourse is observed at four linguistic levels: (1) at the level of morphemes (affixation); (2) at the level of lexemes; (3) at the level of collocations; and (4) at the level of sentences. Affixation is one of the most productive tools of medicalization which leads to the formation of medical neologisms. The lexical manifestations of medicalization implement the following communicative strategies and pragmatic intentions: skepticism expression; attracting the readers’ attention; revealing and denouncing the addictive phenomena and processes of the present-day world. The affixation way of neologization provides the newly created words with a vivid stylistic shade. The use of “medicalized” headlines enables the authors to capture the readers’ attention. Conclusions: Medicalization is a complex process involving the spreading influence of medical terminology into the communicative environment of “non-medical” areas of human life, which requires further linguistic study. Medicalization of virtually all spheres of society is an essential driving force in the formation of the linguistic world-image of the modern man, and the research of this tendency allows us to reveal the underlying processes of human thinking. Методи дослідження: систематизація, узагальнення, наратологічний метод, методи семіотичного аналізу та рецептивної естетики. Об'єкт дослідження – корпус американських прозових творів, об’єднаних медичною тематикою (XIX-XXI ст.). Наукова новизна. У статті досліджено найважливіші знаки-символи в семіотичній системі літературно-медичного дискурсу прози США, виявлено авторські інтенції щодо використання цих знаків, а також очікуваний рецептивний потенціал читача. Висновки. Семіотичний код художньої літератури відіграє ключову роль в інтерпретації образів лікаря і пацієнта в прозових творах, присвячених медичній проблематиці, актуалізує читацьке сприйняття, оприявнюючи розподіл інституційних ролей та особливості спілкування в хронотопі клінічного середовища.
